ZAMBIA PREMIER LEAGUE: THE HEARTBEAT OF ZAMBIAN FOOTBALL

The Zambia Premier League (ZPL), commonly referred to as the Zambia Super League, is the top-tier professional football league in Zambia and remains the backbone of the country’s domestic football structure. Established in 1962, the league has grown into one of the most competitive and passionately followed sporting competitions in the nation.

Current Season Overview

The 2025–2026 Zambia Super League season runs from August 2025 to May 2026 and features 18 clubs competing for national supremacy. Teams contest the league in a double round-robin format, meaning each club plays every other team twice — home and away — over the course of the season.

Some of Zambia’s most historic and widely supported clubs participate in the league, including Nkana FC, Power Dynamos, ZESCO United, Zanaco, Red Arrows, Kabwe Warriors, Nchanga Rangers, and several emerging sides eager to establish themselves at the top level.

Championship and Continental Qualification

The club that finishes top of the league table is crowned Zambia Premier League champions and earns qualification to the CAF Champions League, Africa’s elite club competition. Additional continental slots, depending on national allocations and cup competitions, allow other top-performing teams to represent Zambia in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Promotion and Relegation

The Zambia Premier League operates a promotion and relegation system with the Zambia National Division One, ensuring competitiveness and opportunity for clubs across the country. Teams finishing at the bottom of the table are relegated, while top Division One sides earn promotion at the end of each season.

Historical Significance

With over six decades of competition, the Zambia Premier League has played a central role in developing local talent and shaping the national team. Clubs such as Nkana FC, the most successful in league history, along with Mufulira Wanderers and ZESCO United, have contributed significantly to the league’s rich football heritage.

Role in National Football Development

Beyond silverware, the league serves as the primary platform for identifying and nurturing players for the Zambia national team, the Chipolopolo. Many of the country’s football legends began their careers in the Zambia Premier League before moving on to regional and international success.

As the 2025–2026 season unfolds, the Zambia Premier League continues to deliver intense rivalries, emerging talent, and thrilling football, reaffirming its place as the heartbeat of Zambian football and a key pillar of the nation’s sporting identity.
